Martin Ley returned to racing at RPCYC in a Phantom dinghy in the Fast handicap fleet with great effect claiming first place in his first race in the Phantom (watch out John Bower – you’ve got some competition !!). Chris Hampe took second place in his International Canoe after returning from the nationals in Weymouth where he finished seventh (well done Chris) with Nigel Clatworthy in third place.

Close racing took place in the other fleets which saw James & Paul Scrivens take a well deserved third place in the Enterprise class behind Peter Hickling & Chris Tyrell with Neil Oxton & Martin Austin clocking up another race win. The Slow Handicap fleet saw very close racing amongst the Lightning’s with Rob Beaton leading for most of the race only to see Hugh Spencer take the lead in the closing stages of the race with Steve Oliver close on his heels in third place.

The  Laser fleet saw another Corinthian sailor returning from the nationals where Dan Ellis claimed sixth place in the Laser Radial Nationals held at Mounts Bay (Well done Dan). Tonight’s racing saw Dan take first place ahead of David Rollinson & Neil Dunkley. The Asymmetric fleet saw Steph & Denise Newcomb take first place in their RS200 ahead of Luke Old’s Buzz & Marcus Sim / Laurence Greenough’s RS800.

Well done to all that took part & a special thanks to the line & safety boat crews for running the excellent racing.

It was not until 1753 that Ligoniers Battery was constructed, immediately to the north of the site, with its guns protecting the foreshore to the mouth of the Tamar at Devil’s point. A Second battery was built to protect the mouth of the River Plym. This was called Fredericks Battery and, after these Batteries were decommissioned in the 1850′s, Ligoniers was demolished to allow the construction of Madeira Road. Frederick’s Battery forms the basis of the club premises. The remains of the tunnel connecting these Batteries to the citadel can still be found at the North West corner of our harbour.

The Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club was founded in 1877 in premises in the town. It was formed to promote local sailing and rooms were rented at West hoe and on plymouth pier to conduct our Clubs sailing events. It was so successful that in 1886 it was granted the status of a Royal Yacht Club. This was followed in 1893 by being awarded the permission to fly the Blue Ensign

The growth of the club was such that new premises were needed so in 1896 our present Clubhouse was acquired. After some alterations (including accommodation for a live in steward) the of whole club activities were transferred to this site by the year 1899. It was not, however, until 1936 that the lease was purchased, meaning that the whole of the site is now owned by the club and is freehold.

Not all members approved the move to the new premises. Breakaway groups remained at West hoe (to form the now defunct R.S.W.Y.C) and on Plymouth pier to form the Plymouth Division of the Minima Yacht Club, also now defunct. Our Club originally arranged racing for three classes of yachts and in 1902 pioneered dinghy racing in Plymouth Sound. It progressed until sailing was interrupted by the First World War, although social activities continued with Officers of the R.F.C at Mt Batten as honorary members.

More and More Classes were catered for on the water including the prestigious J class followed by the twelve metre boats. The the club was closed down on 1940 by the second world War and our premises were used for wartime associated activities by the M.O.D

It was in 1947 the the club began to fully operate again and a full sailing programme was available. Various dinghy championships were promoted, National, European and World events were staged.

Since the 1940′s many alterations have been made to the clubhouse. The live-in steward’s accommodation was abolished and larger rooms/toilets/kitchen constructed using the space thereby created. In the 1950′s and 1960′s the slipway and dinghy park were constructed and in 1977 we completed further improvements and additions to the club premises which have given even better facilities for all who use the Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club. The alterations were made with the help of Lottery Grant from Sports Council. It provided us with a Restaurant, disabled access and toilets, a larger Kitchen, new showers with toilets, Committee rooms and a new race control. It has provided much more space and has given the club one of the big venues possible with facilities second to none.

The Extension was officially opened on Tuesday 21st October 1997 by HRH The Princess Royal. In the year 2000 the club was officially licensed to carry out Civil wedding Ceremonies

The fifth race of the summer series finally provided what we have all been waiting for ….. a decent steady wind !! 

With many of our regular sailors away at the NSSA nationals (as well as our normal race officer). Nikki Buckler stepped up to the mark to run the nights racing assisted by David Wines from West Hoe SC (a special thanks to both of you). Despite the absences a healthy number of 28 boats raced in the ideal conditions. 

The Assymetric fleets had a windward leaward course racing between Melampus & West Mallard with Rod Boswijk and Sharon Binney making a welcome appearance and revelling in the conditions. They had a close battle with Graeme Macleod’s Hobie Tiger  but were beaten to second place by Catherine & Rob Lloyd’s RS500. 

The Fast / Slow Handicap fleets along the Laser Fleet & Enterprise fleet also raced out to Melampus with a fantastic reaching leg to Dunstone followed by a broad reach back to West Mallard. Each fleet saw places changing throughout the race with the occasional capsizes to catch the unwary out. 

Neil Oxton & Martin Austin took  a well deserved first place in the Enterprise fleet making four different winners in four races showing how close the racing is in the class. Peter Hickling despite leaping out of his boat prior to the start recovered to take second place ahead of Pete Ganderton. 

The fast handicap fleet saw Dave Bogart & Jeremy Goslin’s Laser 2 take first place ahead of Derry Bowman’s Hawk. The Slow Handicap fleet saw another Lightning domination of the results with Rob Beaton taking the glory ahead of Hugh Spencer with Steve Oliver in third place. 

The well established Laser fleet saw Dan Ellis take fist place ahead of Chris Lloyd with laser 195030 in third spot ahead of David Rollinson. 

Well done to all that took part and a special thanks to all the safety boat crews & line crew.

The other problem we will have is that, due to the Air Show and the fun and games on the Hoe, Madeira Road and Hoe Road are closed to all traffic until 8.00pm, thus making access to the club impossible for cars.

Lightning Report

Up close and personal

The Lightning sailors all get on really well. Good job really as they sail around the course in a tight fleet. This week the leading 3 boats all finshed within 7 seconds.

We still get teased by the weather providers about having 10 knots of breeze but only get 5 knots. It did hold out for the whole race and provided some great summer sailing. It’s not yet got its own wiki page but summer sailing is when there’s a lightish breeze to allow you to sit on the side but not hike out but also not have to hang it out to leeward. It also involves wearing sunglasses and maybe a jaunty hat.

The fleet set up on port tack alongside Mountbatten Breakwater. Rob Beaton and Peter Ganderton in his Ent were over the line at the start and had to throw a U-turn (with no rights) back through the pack. Steve got the best start in the Lightnings and lead Hugh and Guy out into the Sound. Rob followed some 50 metres behind.

The silver lining on being behind at the back of the fleet is that you can see the rest of the fleet sailing away. You can however see how well they are sailing away and make some choices.. Follow, sheep like and bide your time or lauch your audacious attack. Rob chose option B. He tacked on to starboard and found his way to Melampus in first place. Good news – was in the lead.

Bad news – could not see the next mark. It was a laid mark (small and easy to miss unless you know where it is.) It did have nice flag on the top but it’s a bit of worry when you get the lead but don’t know where to lead people to.

Heading towards Dunstone with the Ents highlighted the buoys location so the main aim was to stay in front until the end. This was mostly acomplished. After stick buoy positioned half way to Dunstone it was to West Mallard on a near dead run. Rob held a 50-80 metre lead over the closely scrapping Hugh and Steve with Guy in close attendance as a potential witness for any protests that might results from their combat. I do like the phase in the rules books ‘When two boats meet’. It sounds very friendly, like the two helms wave, smile and say Hello. If you’ve been in one of the boats that ‘meet’ it’s not often (ever) like that.

Seasoned pros like Hugh and Steve keep it fair and out of the protest room which is the best way forward. It’s not a fun place to be.

The second beat required Rob to loosely cover the rest of the fleet and hold on to most of his lead to Melampus. In the run to finish the rest of the fleet closed up to Rob with a new gradiant breeze from the West. Rob and the Ents around him could do nothing but to watch the following pack with their frothy bow waves close them down. Steve Oliver used his momentum to pass Rob to windward and get an overlap for the hook finish. Rob luffed him a number of times but could not take him too high without letting Hugh passed underneath.

Steve gets another win. Rob held second but was quite cross for a few moments. Hugh was third and Guy fourth. Everyone had a real chance of a win and a really close race all the way to the finish.

BTW Steve’s boat is for sale. It seems quite fast and has winning ways.

Dan Ellis from Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club along with Max Robinson & Kate Sargent from Saltash Sailing Club had to qualify for a limited number of spaces allocated to each country in a number of qualifying events held earlier this year.

Dan & Max will be taking part in the Men’s Laser Radial Class with only 18 UK places available out of the 104 entries with 32 countries taking part in this class. Kate Sargent is taking part in the Woman’s Laser Radial Class in one of the 8 allocated UK places out of the 118 worldwide entries with 41 countries taking part in her class.

RPCYC wish all of our sailors the very best of luck in the Laser World Championship which has one of the world’s largest numbers of sailing dinghies. They are a true credit to the sport & to our city proving once again we can produce world class sailors.

A change is not as good as a rest

Slow Handicap Fleet Report

I never thought it was anyway but Steve Oliver proves the point by being the on-form Lightning after a week off.

There was much anticipation of 15 knots of breeze this week but my first view of the Cattewater indicated that hiking out was restricted to Dartmoor. It was, umm, flat. Early birds cruising the start area were gliding nicely along but after previous weeks I feared more paddling was ahead.

The slow handicap fleet were set a course of Melampus, NW Winter, West Mallard.
There was a strong(ish) flood tide, I don’t really know how strong it was, I could not see the moon. From the club line it was a virtual fetch to Melampus on port tack but the hole in the wind at Melampus and tide meant it paid to take a hitch to the east before getting into more tide and less wind. Well that was my plan and I was not alone in my simple logic.

Rob nailed the start (a rare occasion) but had Steve Oliver and a brace of Enterprises chasing him out into the Sound. After some changes of position Rob was back in front by Melampus, leading Steve close behind with Hugh and Guy mixing it with the Enterprises.

Steve turned up the boat speed down the run and caught Rob by NW Winter. They were still battling by the start of the beat from West Mallard.

Whilst Rob and Steve crossed close tacks up the second beat Hugh and Guy were having their own great battle a hundred yards back and enjoying some close racing.

The second lap had the same best route as the first but Steve’s boat speed won the day and got him to Melampus with a 100m lead which he held to the end.

Well done to Matt who completed the race with one lap in his Pico.

The Port of Plymouth Regatta offers fantastic value for money & some first class racing between all the clubs of Plymouth along with people from outside the port. It is THE PLYMOUTH  REGATTA  – SO PLEASE SUPPORT IT

The Plymouth to St Marys race (part of the POP’s Series) will be held on Thursday 15^th July with the first start signal at 17:55. Below are some useful web site links which will provide valuable information on the Isles of Scilly.

The Harbourmaster has advised that we cannot reserve moorings in advance, however he feels sure that we can be accommodated with rafting up on moorings possible in all but strong North Westerly conditions. There are a number of safe anchorages available if there is a shortage of available moorings.

Please be aware that it will be necessary for yachts to take their own finish times & contact the race officer  or RPCYC of their respective times  or retirement from the race (please refer to the races SI’s for further details) .

Close action at the start for the Asymmetric , Laser & Fast handicap fleets

Tonights racing at least started in a reasonable wind with a southerly sea breeze as opposed to the forcasted NNE 14 mph gusting 24 mph winds. The first lap of the course had close racing amongst the various fleets which saw 33 dinghies racing in the sound. As the second lap progressed the sea breeze disappeared as it so often does leaving many struggling to get the better of the strong incoming spring tide.

A decent Westerly / North Westerly wind greeted the yachts and dinghies that took part in this years Pigeon Trophy charity race. From the start Chris Hampe’s International Canoe showed its pace after its winter refit and revelled in the conditions to pull away from Nigel Clatworthy’s Contender who was setting his own respectable pace. Steph & Denise Newcomb were chasing hard in their RS200 along with Beth Mathews & Chloe Bevan-Smith in their Hobie 405. Hugh Spencer’s Lightning dinghy was keeping up with the pack and after 90 minutes of racing missed out on third place by just 14 seconds to Steph & Denise Newcomb. Despite his best efforts Nigel Clatworthy could not match the pace of Chris Hampe’s International Canoe who took a well desreved first place ahead of the Contender. Denise & Steph Newcomb took third place ahead of Hugh Spencer with Beth Mathews & Chloe Bevan-Smith in fifth spot.

The yachts were dominated by the WHSC’s Trapper fleet which saw Keiron Kennedy taking an early lead despite sailing single handed and managied to slowly edge away from the chasing pack of yachts. Gary Wilcox in another Trapper 300 “Patsy” was having a close battle with Dave & Christine Warn’s Gibsea 312 “Pantomime” with the pair just 37 seconds apart at the end of the race. Dave Green & Kirsty Baynham in “La Strega” (yes another Trapper 300!!) finished next ahead of Tony Kennedy in his Hurley 22 ”Zingara”.

On handicap Keiron Kennedy’s “Spy Trapper” took both line & actual honours to claim a well deserved first place (Lu was not impressed !!). Dave & Christine Warn took second place on handicap displacing Gary Wilcox into third place ahead of Dave Green’s “La Strega” & Tony Kennedy’s “Zingara”

After the race Cargreen Yacht Club kindly put on a barbeque for the participants which was greatly appreciated along with a few refreshments from their bar.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the race – well done to all that took part & thankyou to Roger & Chrisine Payne for providing safety cover.

Special thanks must go to Don King & all at Cargreen Yacht Club for their very warm hospitality. We hope to return next year with a possible overnight stopover following popular demand for the event.

Tonight’s racing started well with a reasonable light wind at the start of the fifth race of the spring series. The wind stayed favourable albeit shifty until the onset of a few light rain showers which resulted in the wind turning into something which resembled a patch work quilt.  Despite the conditions thirty four dinghies took part in the race with positions changing throughout the race with gains & losses occurring minute by minute.

The Laser / Laser Radial class has seen a real resurgence with new entries coming along on a weekly basis. Due to the large number of Lasers / Laser Radials we have decided to split out the respective entries from the Fast Handicap fleet into a combined Laser fleet as promised in the series NOR .

After a long period of planning and organisation the Phantom Class announces that the inaugural Europa Cup will be held at Medemblik in Holland over the bank holiday weekend at the beginning of May, 2010.   Never having ventured this far with his Phantom, RPCYC member John Bower, accepted the challenge and entered, joining the current and ex national champions and other notably quick sailors.

After a 6hour drive from Totnes to Burnham-on-Crouch, “phrantic springer” is loaded, the last of six, onto a monster trailer for the journey to Holland.  At the end of 1.5 Hours to Harwich, 7 hours on the ferry and 4 hours in Dutch traffic jams, the regatta centre at Medemblik comes into sight.   All of the boats are safely unloaded and rigged and the class members settle in for a barbeque at the “Sundance Bar”.  Our esteemed class secretary has safely arrived in his motor home and the beers are flowing well.

So to day one, and three races are scheduled on a trapezoidal course with an extra loop on the outer leg.  The weather is grey and the wind blowing f3 to 4 to 5, and so 23 phantoms launch and head dead downwind for the start yacht.  After a while we note that the yacht does not seem to be getting any closer, I think it was moored half way to Denmark!  Eventually all are ready and we get a clean start in a heavy f4 with a nasty short chop.  Powering upwind we all look for the windward mark and discover it must be over the curve of the earth, it is so far away.  After what seems to be miles, a relief to bear-away onto a flying reach and then downwind.  This is fun, a bit, “ rock and rolly,” on the run but survive in time to go upwind again, this time only a few miles but still the wind blows.  Back down the run with a few hairy moments but all well down the final reach to the finish boat.  Great joy in finishing 8^th, 1^st time for a top 10 finish in a major Phantom regatta.  So back to the start boat and off we go again.  An even better first beat, and 5^th at the windward mark.  I need to pinch myself, things just do not go this well.  Back down to earth on the 1^st run with a massive death roll and spectacular splash landing, catapulting your correspondent into the water.  Eventually getting the boat upright but not able to get back on board.  After suitable assistance from the safety boat it’s back to the starting area to await the next attempt.  Final race of the day pans out much as the first with another 8^th place and a very happy helm.  That is until I realised that I had a 2mile beat back to the slipway.

Some very tired, aching, but happy phantom drivers join the OK bunch to celebrate the Queen of Holland’s official birthday and many toasts are drunk, along with great assortment of other brews.

And so on to day 2, and it appears that one or two sailors are operating on “autopilot”.  The wind has decreased slightly but not much.  After two more tiring, exciting and long races 2 9^th places are registered and dreams of a top 10 finish are starting to be considered.  With the wind now shifting more the third race was a change.  Previously it had paid to go left from the start and then back to the windward mark.  Race 6 and most go left, a few not having had too good a start go right and when they are all at the top of the fleet at the mark, the rest of us are struggling.  Some great racing all down the fleet to a 15th place finish and another 2 mile beat back to the slipway.

That evening it is a meal down the pub and again the beer and the beverages are consumed to great effect.   It cannot be suggested that the Phantom class are backward about coming forward when a social event is occurring.  After a suitable refreshing sleep it is back to the regatta centre to find a very solid f4 with horizontal rain.   The OK and Solo fleets have started to pack up declaring their events complete.  Not so for the Phantoms.  With a tie and count-back looming for 1^st place, 5 intrepid Phantom drivers take to the racecourse with a sixth following a little later.  Yours truly decided that discretion was the better part and “wimped” it out in the dinghy park.   Eventually the brave few return to the slipway and we find that our current national champion, Charlie Cumbley, has added the Europa Cup to his mantelpiece, followed closely by class stalwart, Simon Childs then Nick Craig and Jim Hunt in fourth.

With the boats packed and stacked on various trailers the class departs the Medemblik Regatta Centre and catches various ferries back to Blighty.  Yours truly very happy with 11^th overall and 1^st aged over 50.  I am certain that the class will run the Europa Cup again in the future, maybe in warmer waters, and I am also certain that if able, I will be attending.   I have many very good memories of the event, faultless race management, results posted even before competitors get ashore, quaint Dutch small town, and most of all, the camaraderie, mickey taking, socialising, and all round friendliness of the members of the Phantom Class when venturing into a wider sailing world.

The fourth race of the RPCYC Spring Series saw 39 dinghies racing in a gusty NNE wind which saw a few swimming lessons & the occasional spectacular wipeout. All the crews came back with big smiles on their faces following the race which saw a committee boat start in Jennycliffe Bay which proved popular with all the competitors.

The asymmetric fleet was somewhat decimated by the gusty conditions whith saw four retirements during the race. Cawsands Bay sailor Charlie Glasspool revelled in the gusty conditions to circulate the course a near light speed proportion in his Hobie Tiger to claim a well deserved first place ahead of Plymouth Youth Sailings Jamie & Betsy in their Laser 2000 with Russell Brown & Zoe Kendall also from Plymouth Youth Sailing in third place showing the rest of the fleet how it should be done – well done to all.

The fast handicap fleet saw some very close racing throughout the race with Lasers dominating the top six positions. Nigel Clatworthy unfortunately misread the course & sailed two legs in the wrong order but still finished a credible seventh place despite his mistake. The fourth lap saw Max Robinson in his Standard Laser finally pull away from Dan Ellis  in his laser radial who was leading Max Robinson for the early stages on the race.  Despite Max’s best efforts Dan Ellis fought to keep his laser Radial in contention & was rewarded when he beat Max by just one second on corrected time to claim first place  with Max Rbinson in second place &  Chris Lloyd in third place in a Standard Laser …… (NOTE these results have been corrected from the previous report due to the laser radials results being calculated on 2009 PY handicap instead of 2010 – apologies to Dan & Max)

The Enterprise fleet as you would expect saw very close class racing with Peter Hickling & Phil Pascoe in “Dyskenetic” making up for a pre start waterbourne excursion (capsize to everyone else !!) by taking first place by just 5 seconds over Pete Ganderton & Alan Scarlett’s enterprise “Tacamahaca”. Dave Michell & Anna Mills fought off the rest of the class to claim a well deserved third place in “Hell Bent”.

The slow handicap fleet saw a number of new entries in the form of Toppers which excelled in the conditions to claim the top three positions in the fleet with Robbie Robinson taking first place ahead of Ben Rollinson in second place & Emily Lloyd in third place.

 The weather god’s do not seem to be playing this year with light winds once again dominating the racing so far compared to last years comparatively lively races which now seem a distant memory.

 The light conditions thankfully have not deterred the entries which last night saw 37 boats on the water. Despite the light conditions close racing took place across all the fleets as the crews fought to get the best out of their boats in the light conditions.

 I must say it is really encouraging to see so many boats on the water with many new faces taking part this year. With the numbers increasing I would like to ask all the competitors to encourage their friends to take part in the series. In 2009 we set a target of 40 boats racing and achieved 41 boats. This year we want to raise the bar & get at least 50 boats racing. Plymouth Sound is a world class venue for sailing & we want to put Plymouth back on the map as a prime site for good quality dinghy racing. We cannot do this without your help so please spread the word & encourage friends to come along & take part in the racing.

 During the racing the Corinthian is open for friends & family to watch the racing from an ideal vantage point & after the racing there is always food available with a choice of sailing suppers at £6. There’s always a good atmosphere & it’s a great way to round the night off discussing the events & getting the results first hand.

The final race of the series saw a force four south westerly wind with the IRC class racing a windward leeward course between Newgrounds & Dunstone whilst the PY class raced a traditional triangular course between Newgrounds, Duke Rock & Dunstone.

The racing in both the IRC & PY fleets was close with positions being fought  for throughout the  two & an half hour long race. Colin Leach’s Red Fox took first place in the IRC fleet despite finishing nearly twenty four minutes after Andy Williams Mighty Max 3 who finished second on handicap just ahead of Rick Adams’s Rushcutter.

After two hours racing Janie Smallridge missed out on first place in the PY fleets by 88 seconds  with Patrick Chapmans Sixpence taking first place once again to complete the series taking first place in all the races. Chris Pope from University of Plymouth SC took third place in a J80 with Eric Bates Rumpleteazer taking fourth place.

The IRC fleet saw the top three places seperated by one point between each position with John McLaren’s  Ker 39 “Miridadi” taking top spot on the podium with Colin Leach’s RF290 “Red Fox” in second place & Daniel Flanagan’s J80 “Jasmine” in third place.

The PY fleet saw consistancy paying off for Patrick Chapman’s Moody 27 “Sixpence” claiming first place ahead of Eric Bates Scanner 33 “Rumpleteazer” &  Janie Smallridge’s Albin Ballard “Duchess”.

An easterly wind meant the dinghies had a short beat to the first mark just off Mountbatten. The first start saw the Asymmetric fleet & Fast Handicap fleet starting together with 21 dinghies  ranging from Hobie Tigers to Laser Radials rounding the first mark at the same time proving entertaining  for both the sailors and those watching from RPCYC / Mountbatten.

Once round the winward mark the Asymmetric fleet set off on a windward leaward course whilst the other fleets raced a more traditional course .

The leading boats in the asymmetric fleet unfortunately mistook the Asia buoy for St Nicholas buoy & hence sailed the wrong course and opted to retire with only three boats sailing the correect course. Congratulations go to Steph & Denise Newcomb who won in their first race in an RS200.

The Fast Handicap fleet was dominated by lasers saw some very close racing . Max Robinson took first place in his Lase ahead of Dave Adams & Dan Ellis.

The Enterprise fleet saw Dave Mitchell win the first race despite loosing his Jib stick which was kindly picked up for him by another competitor. Peter Hickling & Chris Tyrell claimed second place by just 13 seconds to beat Pete Ganderton & Alan Scarlett into third place.

The Slow Handicap fleet saw Chris Rollinson take first place ahead of Hugh Spencers Lightning with Steve Oliver in third place also in a Lightning.

With a WNW 18 – 22 knot wind the race officer set a six lap windward leeward course between Yacht Haven Buoy & F Buoy.

The IRC boats were first away with Maridadi able to stretch her legs in these conditions to take an early lead. Quickbrew & Mighty Max 3 were locked into a close battle throughout the race as was Jasmine & Jostix who were revelling in the conditions especially the downwind legs. Rushcutter managed to keep ahead of the two J’s despite their best efforts & tried to keep the leading IRC boats in their sights.

Peter Duffy’s yacht Xstatic suffered an early failure when they lost their genoa halyard & unfortunately had to retire from the race.

Meanwhile the PY boats were also having a close battle with Rumpleteazer & Duchess locked together in close racing throughout the race with Sixpence ever close on their heels.

After an hour of racing a dark ominous cloud descended the Tamar with a torrential downpour and its associated squally winds. Maridadi had just rounded the windward mark & hoisted here spinnaker when the squalls hit & suffered a spectacular knock down. Luckily everyone was ok & they were able to continue the race. Red Kite was also having problems of her own in the squally conditions with a torn spinnaker the result which saw their early retirement. Once the rain squall had past conditions returned to a relative calm for a few minutes allowing the crews to recover before the wind went back to its pre squall strength.

Despite the knockdown John McLaren’s Maridadi went on to win the days racing in the IRC fleet by more than four minutes on corrected time ahead of the J80 Jasmine. After nearly two hours racing the results were tied to the second for Quickbrew & Rushcutter on corrected time with both boats awarded joint third place proving how close the racing had been across the fleet.

The PY fleet saw a mirror image of last weeks racing with Sixpence taking the podium position with Rumpleteazer in second spot & Duchess in third place depite their best efforts.

I would like to thanks all that took part in a very eventful & entertaining race – I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

The PYS fleet saw Rumpleteazer lead from the start with Duchess close on her heels followed by Sixpence. Once the results had been worked out the positions were reversed for Sixpence  taking first place on handicap followed by Rumpleteazer and then Duchess in third place.

Everyone enjoyed the first race of the season & look forward to the second race next Sunday.

Saturday 27th March saw races 11 & 12 of this years Gul Series which has seen a resurgence of the Asymmetric dinghies in Plymouth with the fleet having the highest turnouts across the three fleets racing.

Today was no exception with Graeme Macleod returning from his sking break (luckily with no breakages !!) to circulate the sound at downhill speeds followed by Rod & Sharons B14 who were in their usual good form.

The start was unfortunately delayed due to Naval shipping movements but as the racing progressed the WNW wind picked up to give all the competitors a really good race.

Rod & Sharon proved the  B14 was the boat to beat claiming first in both races with Graeme Macleod taking second place in the first race & third in the second race (hope your following this !!). The long  journey from Oxford proved worth while for George Barker in the SB3 with a third place in the first race & a second place in the second race of the day which sees him leading the overall results.

The fast handicap fleet saw a battle of the of the single handers for the top three positions with Dave Adams Laser winning the first race ahead of Dan Ellis in a Laser Radial & Nigel Clatworthy in third spot in his Contender. The second race of the day saw a slightly  stronger wind which allowed Nigel Clatworthy to keep out on the wire to power the contender into first place ahead of a consistent sail from Dan Ellis to claim second place once again with Dave Adams in third place.

The Slow Handicap saw James Torr sail a lonesome race with the rest of the fleet not to be seen !! (Well done James)

Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st March saw Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club host the second round of the Laser / Laser Radial World & European Qualifier with 154 boats turning up for the weekend at Mountbatten. The weekend event was run as a joint venture between Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club , Plymouth Youth Sailing & the Mountbatten Centre with the Laser Class Association providing their own race officer (Ken Falcon) with Keith Kendall from RPCYC / PYS being the assistant race officer providing valuable local knowledge.

The Lasers were made up of 52 Standard Lasers & 102 Laser Radials with competitors from the far reaches of the United Kingdom & Ireland. There were even Competitors from Bulgaria & Canada making it a truly international event. Plymouth was represented by Dan Ellis (RPCYC), Max Robinson (SSC), Kate Sargent (SSC), Liam Arrowsmith (PYC) & Ben Dodwell  in the Laser Radial fleet with Adam Littlejohn (RWYC), Tom Rainey & Philip Reynolds (SSC) in the Laser Standard class.

Saturday saw a very wet misty day with visibility varying throughout the day challenging both the competitors & the race management team.  At times it was a difficult task just to see the windward mark which along with a large sea swell & flood tide really tested the competitors. The triangular course was set up initially between South of Fort Picklecombe & Cawsands with each leg being 0.8 nautical miles long. Two races were held here with many of the competitors sailing in a large swell for the first time making it a new experience for them !!.

The third race was stopped shortly after the start as the wind shifted nearly 120 degrees. As the wind was now in a northerly westerly direction the race officer decided to move the course to within the sound.  During the transit to the sound the fleet were greeted by a pod of Dolphins which jumped between the boats with some twisting in the air to the enjoyment of sailors.  By now the rain had stopped & there was even the slightest promise of sunshine to raise the spirits of everyone. The wind had also increased in strength to provide some exhilarating racing.

The Asymmetric class has seen a boost in numbers in 2010 with classes varying from an Hobie Tiger to Laser SB3 & an Hobie 405 to name a few. Despite the wide range of classes the racing has been close throughout the series so far. The squally conditions with gusts reaching force six at times saw Graeme Macloed & Chris Butler tame their tiger & race around the course at warp speeds to take first place in both races. The two
SB3’s also had a close race with positions changing between the two closely matched boats. George Barker from Oxford Sailing Club eventually managed to get the better of Stuart Jones in both races to claim second place despite the best efforts of Stuart Jones crew who had a their fair share of moments as did most of the fleet when the gust hit as they neared the leeward mark. Chris Davison was getting used to his Nacra Inter 20 cat  in only his second race in the boat & claimed a well deserved fourth spot.
Another notable achievement was Beth Mathews & Chloe Beavan – Smith  who must be congratulated after sailing a great race in the very difficult conditions to claim fifth place in their Hobie 405 which at 14 was a fantastic achievement.

The Fast Handicap fleet saw more new entries with Jonathan Frary racing his RS300 for the first time in this series. He had a close race with John Bowers Phantom & Nigel Clatworthy’s Contender, however it was Dan Ellis in his laser Radial that took first place in race 5 ahead of John Bowers Phantom & Catworthy’s Contender with Ben Dodwell in fouth spot in another Laser Radial. The Sixth Race saw Nigel Clatworthy take first place ahead of Dan Ellis & Ben Dodwell with Dave Adams taking fourth place ahead of John Bowers phantom who found the down wind legs a little too much Rock n Roll with an inevitable swimming lesson that followed.

The Slow Handicap fleet saw the Plymouth University Firely’s take first & third place with RS Feva 1105 splitting the Fireflys to take a well deserved second place.

With six races completed the Asymmetric Fleet is being led by Graeme Macleod’s Hobie Tiger one point ahead of Jon & Nikki Buckler’s RS400 with Stuart Jones in the SB3 in third place. The Fast Handicap Fleet sees Nigel Clatworthy take over first spot in his Contender from John Bowers Phantom with Kieron & Betsy Kennedy in third place in their Kestrel. The Slow Handicap fleet has Plymouth University Team 3 leading the series with Plymouth University Team 6 in second place ahead of Guy Mitchelmore in third place in his Lightning.

Plymouth Sound is arguably one of the best stretches of water to race in on the South coast & provides a natural amphitheatre to watch from. 

Dinghy racing will be held on Wed – Friday evenings starting at 18:15 with results / food & drinks available after the racing at the Regatta Office (RPCYC). The weekend sees a whole day of racing on the Saturday followed by a great evening of entertainment with a live band playing at the RPCYC. Sunday is the final day of the racing which sees racing in the morning followed by the regatta prize giving.  

The racing will have committee boat starts & racing around navigation buoys in Plymouth Sound along with laid marks. Class racing will be offered for any class having more than six entries with handicap racing for Fast, Medium, Slow, Asymmetric  fleets.  There is also a team prize for the club with the best aggregate Overall score from three different classes. So why not encourage fellow competitors from your club to enter a team ?.

To encourage youngsters into the sport there will be a Youth Rookie Regatta  for under 19’s who are in their first season of racing & have only sailed at their own clubs in the past. The  races will be held on the same dates / times of the main regatta making it a Regatta for all of the family irrespective of experience.

The regatta committee have strived to keep the costs down for the 2010 Regatta & by entering early there are significant savings on the already very competitively priced regatta proving good value for money racing.  Additionally there is free dinghy parking at Elphinstone Dinghy park courtesy of Plymouth City Council.

So keep the 28^th July – 1^st August free in your diary so that you can take part in the Plymouth Regatta 2010 & enjoy some first class racing with some evenings to remember  !!.

They were greeted with very fluky NNW winds which started as a Force 1 – 2 & ended as at the top end of a gusty force 3 with shifts to match the gusts.

This week  saw a number of new entries which included a Nacra Inter 20 and a Viper 640 along with more traditional entries from the laser fleet & other handicap entries.

The over night strong winds abated to a force 2 / 3 SW wind  which saw the Asymmetric fleet race a windward leeward course with a temporary mark laid South of Drakes Island & West Mallard as the leeward  mark.  The first race saw Rod Boswijk & Sharon Binney dominate the race in their B14 with John Cotgreave from Plymouth University in his RS700  managing to beat Graeme Macleod Hobie Tiger into third spot.

The fast & slow handicap fleets had a more tradition course which saw them race to Melampus then onto Asia & NW Winter before rounding West Mallard.

Martin Kimber returned to the laser class  in the fast handicap fleet with a first place to make the transition worthwhile. Keiron & Betsy Kennedy sailed an excellent race in their Kestral to claim second place ahead of Nigel Clatworthy’s Contender.

The slow handicap race saw the six Firefly dinghiesfrom Plymouth University misread the start line with all boats over the start line, Guy Mitcelmore in his Lightning managed to get the better of  Chris Rollinson in a Europe dinghy to claim first & second places respectively.

The second race saw the Asymmetric fleet take the buoys to port with West Mallard being the first buoy. The first three boats from race 1 misread the course & effectively raced a lap of the course before starting the race when the passed West Mallard to port for the first time. The SB3 sailed by George Barker from Oxford SC soon started to pull away from the second SB3 sailed by Stuart Jones who had a close battle with Jon & Nikki Buckler who had their first race in their RS400. Eventually George Barker claimed a well deserved first place ahead of Jon & Nikki Buckler’s RS400 who kept Stuart Jones SB3 close enough to beat him on handicap.

The second race for the Fast & slow handicap fleets saw the race to Melampus again, then onto Dunstone before returning to West Mallard.

The fast handicap fleet saw a reversal of fortunes for the laser & contender with Nigel Clatworthy’s Contender taking first place ahead of Kieron & Betsy Kennedy’s Kestral with Martin Kimbers laser in third spot.

The slow handicap felt saw a repeat of the first race with all of the Firefly’s over the start line. Guy Mitchelmore repeated his first race success to claim another first ahead of Chris Rollinson.

Overall the Asymmetric fleet is currently being led by Jon & Nikki Buckler’s RS400 just ahead of George Barker’s SB3 with Rod Boswijk & Sharon Binney in third place in their B14. The Fast Handicap has Nigel Clatworthy’s Contender & Martin Kimber’s Laser tied on points with Keiron & Betsy Kennedy in third place just a quarter of a point behind.

The slow handicap fleet has Guy Mitchelmore leading ahead of Chris Rollinson.

With many other boats entered in the series already the next race on the 30^th January promises to be another excellent race.

Fancy dress was the name of the day with many Father Christmas outfits along with a few fairies to brighten up the cold day. Winner of the fancy dress competition went to Graeme McCloud dressed up as King Kong & Chris Butler dressed up as a Damsel in distress on board their Hobie Tiger.

Eventually the wind filled in enough for the race officer to set a course which saw the slow & fast handicap fleets race the same course. The fast handicap fleet started first & by the time the boats reached the first mark the wind had subsided to the slightest breath. It was not long before the slow handicap fleet caught the fast handicap where the majority of boats remained trying to beat the flood tide. Most dinghies were able to keep pace with the tide but as soon as anyone lost momentum they were seen sailing in reverse at 3 – 4 Knots much to the amusement of the others.

Iain Christie & Tim McEvoy in their 505 were the first to manage to round the windward mark & make it past the second mark before heading to the finish line.

Eventually the race officer had no option but to end the race with only one finisher. The rest of the boats were towed home in the calm conditions & were greeted by a snowy end to the days sailing.

Congratulations to all that took part in the series. Special thanks need to be made to Keith Kendall our Race Officer & his line crew. Along with the safety boat crews of RPCYC / Plymouth Youth Sailing / Hooe Point Sailing Club who turned out in all conditions ranging from sunny days to very stormy conditions & finally snow !!

Without these people we would not be able to race.

Thankfully the weather abated once again to allow two races to take place with a variable force four wind which started as a WSW & gradually worked its way around towards the south as the racing progressed.

There was close racing in both the fast handicap & slow handicap fleets which saw a few capsizes here and there along with Graeme Macleod parting company with his Hobie Tiger in first race of the day.

The second race saw a few premature retirements due to gear failure ranging from a broken boom on a B14 to a hole in the bottom of Solo 986 caused by the owner putting his foot through the floor (I must go on a diet !!). Both dinghies got back safely under their own steam with repairs needed !!

After the racing we will gather at RPCYC for the series Prize Giving (food & drink will be available).

The winds from the west proved challenging for both the competitors & the race officer !! with the wind starting from the west then swinging to the north & disappearing altogether at one stage before going south & then east to round the compass off !!

Despite these challenges (who would want to be a race officer on these days !!)  we did manage to get three races in despite a long wait for the worlds slowest tanker to come in between the second & third races (thanks to all that stuck with it).

The average wind forecast is the best we have seen for sometime so fingers crossed we may be able to get out on the water once again after a long enforced break

Results

The First race saw the fast Handicap fleet sail a windward leg to Ash followed by a run back to West Mallard with the asymmetric Dinghy reaching at warp speeds especially Graham McCloud who did a fantastic job to keep his Hobie Tiger the right way up !!

Rod Boswijk & Sharon Binney revelled in the conditions to take first place in their B14 with John Bower’s Phantom in second place ahead of Kieron & Betsy Kennedy who were literally flying in their Kestral.

The Slow Handicap fleet had 23 starters & they sailed a similar course with the windward mark being NW Winter with a run back to West Mard & a short reach to South Mallard.

The series has attracted a good number of laser sailors who dominated the race with close racing throughout the six laps they completed. Dan Ellis took a well deserved first place ahead of Neil Dunkley in second & Kate Sargeant in third place. Rob Lloyd sailed a fantastic race & claimed fourth place in his Topper.

After the first race the Race Officer decided to take advantage of Brittanny Ferries departing to change the course whilst the waiting for the ferry to depart. A huge squall then came through leaving many crews swimming.

 It was decided to abandon the second race to leave the rescue boats to recover those in need of help. Special thanks go the safety boat crews of Plymouth Youth Sailing & RPCYC.

Bright sunshine & a gusty North Easterly wind provided an excellent last race for the end of the series with close racing thoughout the various fleets.

Marcus Sim & Laurence Greenough continued proved their consistant form to win the Assymetric race with Russell Brown & Zoe Kendall in second place.

Chris Hampe sped off into the distance in his International Canoe with close racing in the Laser fleet with Dan Ellis finally finishing 5 second ahead of the next laser.

There was also close racing in both the Enterprise fleet & Slow Handicap fleets with Martin Bevan & Nick Thomas had a very close battle with Pete Ganderton & Alan Scarlett  in the Enterprise class with Martin Bevan finally getting the better of Pete Ganderton. The Slow Handicap fleet saw the usual battle between the Solo & Lightning with Max & Rob Beaton  taking an early lead in their RS Feva. As the race progressed the Solo & Lightning of Jon Buckler & Hugh Spencer locked in a very tight race before the Solo managed to break away with Max & Rob Beaton hard on the heels of the leading pair. Eventually Jon Buckler’s Solo won with Max & Rob Beaton claiming second place ahead of Hugh Spencer’s Lightning.
