Sadly the Wednesday Rooster Summer Series are finally over :(

Bright sunshine & a gusty North Easterly wind provided an excellent last race for the end of the series with close racing thoughout the various fleets.

Marcus Sim & Laurence Greenough continued proved their consistant form to win the Assymetric race with Russell Brown & Zoe Kendall in second place.

Chris Hampe sped off into the distance in his International Canoe with close racing in the Laser fleet with Dan Ellis finally finishing 5 second ahead of the next laser.

There was also close racing in both the Enterprise fleet & Slow Handicap fleets with Martin Bevan & Nick Thomas had a very close battle with Pete Ganderton & Alan Scarlett  in the Enterprise class with Martin Bevan finally getting the better of Pete Ganderton. The Slow Handicap fleet saw the usual battle between the Solo & Lightning with Max & Rob Beaton  taking an early lead in their RS Feva. As the race progressed the Solo & Lightning of Jon Buckler & Hugh Spencer locked in a very tight race before the Solo managed to break away with Max & Rob Beaton hard on the heels of the leading pair. Eventually Jon Buckler’s Solo won with Max & Rob Beaton claiming second place ahead of Hugh Spencer’s Lightning.

After the frustration of the last two races being cancelled due to extreme conditions it was a pleasure to have a sunny evening along with a slightly gusty NNE wind.

28 boats raced in the penultimate race of the Rooster Summer Series. The crews started with a downwind run to Melampus before a beat back to NE Winter then onto West Mallard & South Mallard.

With 16 boats in the combined slow handicap / Enterprise  start there was an interesting downwind leg with many of the slower boats in the fleet shadowing the faster boats resulting in the majority of the fleet rounding Melampus within seconds of each other. As the race progressed Pete Ganderton & Alan Scarlett had a close battle with Peter Hickling & Chris Tyrrell in the Enterprise fleet who were in turn chased hard by Dave Michell & Anna Mills. At the end of the race 39 seconds split the leading three boats in the Enterprise fleet.

The slow handicap fleet saw close battles between the Lightnings & Solo of Jon Buckler. The conditions however saw Ben Rollinson sail an excellent race to claim a well deserved first place in his Topper ahead of Jon Buckler Solo & Hugh Spencer’s Lightning who took third place just ahead of Rob & Finlay Beaton who kept the leading group within their sight throughout the race.

The Asymetric fleet saw Marcus Sim & Laurence Greenough circulate at warp speeds in their RS800 to take first place ahead of Andrew Jones & James Greenacre in their RS400.

The Fast Handicap fleet saw Chris Hampe take first place in his International Canoe ahead of Dan Ellis in his Laser with Neil Wilson & Steve Fraser making a welcome return in their Wayfarer to claim third place.

Summer’s over

After two cancelled Wednesday nights there are only one race left in the Rooster Series.

Some of us are wondering what to do when the Summer’s over?

thinking

For others Autumn and Winter sailing await.  You will need a hat.

2009-09-02 – Cancelled

by Keith Kendall

“Having just walked up on to the Hoe I have taken the decision to cancel this evening’s racing. It is currently blowing quite hard with a forecast of between S’ly 29mph and S/Wly 23 gusting 38 knots depending on which forecast you use. There is also heavy rain on the way.”
