The Clubs slipway is now cleaned – many thanks to Roger Payne.

We will need to make up a rota of volunteers to clean the slipway on a bi weekly basis (please let me know if you can help).

We plan to bring our club dinghies around from the Barbican to RPCYC on Monday 12th April at 17:00 meeting at shed 14 on the barbican (next to the car ramp leading to water taxi pontoon).

2010-03-27 Doombar Spring Series

Sunday 27th March saw the first race of the Doombar Spring Series.  The yachts were met with a light Southerley wind which dropped off ater the start but filled in as the race progressed. The IRC fleet was led by Might Max 3  on the first lap of the race with Miridadi leading from the second lap onwards. The J80 Jasmine stayed close the the leading pair and took first place on handicap by nearly two minutes with Red Fox taking second place ahead of Mighty Max 3 in third spot & Miridadi in fourth.

The PYS fleet saw Rumpleteazer lead from the start with Duchess close on her heels followed by Sixpence. Once the results had been worked out the positions were reversed for Sixpence  taking first place on handicap followed by Rumpleteazer and then Duchess in third place.

Everyone enjoyed the first race of the season & look forward to the second race next Sunday.

PLEASE NOTE :

The provisional results have been updated – many thanks to Alex Hugo & James Eastbury for highlighting an input error for the start times :(

Please click here for the updated results which affected 3rd to 6th positions in the IRC fleet.

Apologies to all concerned.

Can all IRC boats please ensure the race committee have this years copy of their IRC certificate before the next race

Saturday 27th March saw races 11 & 12 of this years Gul Series which has seen a resurgence of the Asymmetric dinghies in Plymouth with the fleet having the highest turnouts across the three fleets racing.

Great photos of todays racing courtesy of Nikki Buckler:

Today was no exception with Graeme Macleod returning from his sking break (luckily with no breakages !!) to circulate the sound at downhill speeds followed by Rod & Sharons B14 who were in their usual good form.

The start was unfortunately delayed due to Naval shipping movements but as the racing progressed the WNW wind picked up to give all the competitors a really good race.

Rod & Sharon proved the  B14 was the boat to beat claiming first in both races with Graeme Macleod taking second place in the first race & third in the second race (hope your following this !!). The long  journey from Oxford proved worth while for George Barker in the SB3 with a third place in the first race & a second place in the second race of the day which sees him leading the overall results.

The fast handicap fleet saw a battle of the of the single handers for the top three positions with Dave Adams Laser winning the first race ahead of Dan Ellis in a Laser Radial & Nigel Clatworthy in third spot in his Contender. The second race of the day saw a slightly  stronger wind which allowed Nigel Clatworthy to keep out on the wire to power the contender into first place ahead of a consistent sail from Dan Ellis to claim second place once again with Dave Adams in third place.

The Slow Handicap saw James Torr sail a lonesome race with the rest of the fleet not to be seen !! (Well done James)

Todays results can be found here with the Series overall results found here

Once again many thanks to all that took part, don’t forget the last two races of the series are on the 10th April with the Series Prize Giving being held at RPCYC at 14:00 (food & drinks available – so why not come along a cheer on the winners and have a good afternoon reminiscing the events of this enjoyable series  in the warmth of the clubhouse).

Finally thank you to our resident race officer Keith Kendall & his dedicated line crew who have turned out in all weathers to run the racing. Also a special thanks to the safety boat crews from Plymouth Youth Sailing / Hooe Point Sailing Club & RPCYC without all of these people we would not be racing – THANK YOU

Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st March saw Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club host the second round of the Laser / Laser Radial World & European Qualifier with 154 boats turning up for the weekend at Mountbatten. The weekend event was run as a joint venture between Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club , Plymouth Youth Sailing & the Mountbatten Centre with the Laser Class Association providing their own race officer (Ken Falcon) with Keith Kendall from RPCYC / PYS being the assistant race officer providing valuable local knowledge.

The Lasers were made up of 52 Standard Lasers & 102 Laser Radials with competitors from the far reaches of the United Kingdom & Ireland. There were even Competitors from Bulgaria & Canada making it a truly international event. Plymouth was represented by Dan Ellis (RPCYC), Max Robinson (SSC), Kate Sargent (SSC), Liam Arrowsmith (PYC) & Ben Dodwell  in the Laser Radial fleet with Adam Littlejohn (RWYC), Tom Rainey & Philip Reynolds (SSC) in the Laser Standard class.

Saturday saw a very wet misty day with visibility varying throughout the day challenging both the competitors & the race management team.  At times it was a difficult task just to see the windward mark which along with a large sea swell & flood tide really tested the competitors. The triangular course was set up initially between South of Fort Picklecombe & Cawsands with each leg being 0.8 nautical miles long. Two races were held here with many of the competitors sailing in a large swell for the first time making it a new experience for them !!.

The third race was stopped shortly after the start as the wind shifted nearly 120 degrees. As the wind was now in a northerly westerly direction the race officer decided to move the course to within the sound.  During the transit to the sound the fleet were greeted by a pod of Dolphins which jumped between the boats with some twisting in the air to the enjoyment of sailors.  By now the rain had stopped & there was even the slightest promise of sunshine to raise the spirits of everyone. The wind had also increased in strength to provide some exhilarating racing.

Sunday saw light winds with the start delayed until the wind settled in both strength & direction. The racing was once again held within the sound with two races held back to back & saw some very close racing once again with position being fought for throughout the races.

The Laser Standard fleet was won by Olympic Gold Medallist & World Number One Laser Laser Sailor Paul Goodison with Nick Thompson second & Eifion Mon third. Local sailors Tom Rainey finished a very credible 18th with Philip Reynolds in 25th &  Adam Little John in 50th place in the series.

The laser radial fleet was split into Alpha & Beta fleets due to the large number of entries (102), the results were then combined to give overall results for the radial class. The racing was extremely close with Ali Young eventually taking first place , Charlotte Dobson in second & John Currie in third.

Of the local sailors RPCYC’s Dan Ellis finished in 18th place with Max Robinson (SSC) in 31st place. Kate Sargent  (SSC) despite winning the Beta Fleet finished in 62nd place with Liam Arrowsmith (PYC) in 80th Place & Ben Dodwell in 100th place.

The first round of the qualifiers was held at Stokes Bay on the 13th / 14th March & saw Max Robinson take 17th Place, Dan Ellis 23rd & Kate Sargent 52nd.

We wish all our local sailors the very best of luck in the next & final round of the qualifiers to be held at Hayling Island next month.

Who said multi tasking was beyond the male of the species?

Special thanks are made to the volunteers from Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club, Plymouth Youth Sailing, Hooe Point Sailing Club & the staff of the Mountbatten Centre for making the series such a success & further promoting Plymouth as a World class venue to sail in.
