Millbay Mungling – Enterprise Report 2012-05-30
A few white horses and steady Westerly breeze greeted those early to the Corinthian dinghy park. As often happens during the late afternoon the wind moderated and veered to the North West by the time we launched.
So it was more offshore shenanigans with the wind flicking around as it come over the Hoe and Millbay.
Race officer Keith delayed the start to allow a coaster to exit the Cattewater afterwhich we quickly got underway.
A starboard bias on the line bunched the fleet up on right under the club to get to the windward end.
The first leg was the beat up to Ash in front of the Hoe. Martin Bevan took a tack close into the Lion’s Den which was out of the favourable ebb tide but into a good shift. With some quick but smooth tacking action Martin closed down on Egg n Spoon to round Ash a couple of boat lengths back from the lead.
The rest of the fleet was close behind and Peter and Alan in Different shade took on a turn of speed to overhaul Martin to windward on the leg to Melampus.
Round NE Winter it was a run to Liberty Yachts. Spoon rounded first follwed very closely by Different Shade and No Handles.
Up the second beat Martin mungled the shifts very well and over took Peter to regain second place by Ash.
After their rock hopper start Rob and Wallace in Egg n Spoon managed to hold on to a slim lead until they extended away in the final legs to win from Martin and Nick in No Handles.
It was great to have Dave back out on the water after 2 weeks away. In other news FRP Enterprise ‘No Nails’ is back on the dinghy park after a few years away. Billy is hoping to bring it out in the next few weeks. He was not around at the end of racing so must have been at a farmer’s market of something.
